US to once again recognize EU diplomats after downgrading status earlier this year

Trump administration snubs EU with diplomatic downgrade
According to the announcement from the US Mission to the European Union, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "has instructed the Chief of Protocol to take the necessary measures to effect this reinstatement."
Earlier this year, the Trump administration downgraded the European Union's diplomatic status from a state to an international organization. The shift was a reversal of a decision made in 2016 by the Obama administration.
The downgrade by the administration riled Brussels, deepening a growing rift and appalling diplomats in Washington who decried the move as "amateur" and "unprofessional."
The protocol status will be applied to Stavros Lambrinidis, the EU's new ambassador to the US. Lambrinidis' predecessor, David O'Sullivan, was serving in the role when the 28-member bloc learned during President George H.W. Bush's funeral in December that the Trump administration had changed the European Union's diplomatic status.
At the time, O'Sullivan became aware of the change in status when he was among the last to be called in a queue of ambassadors in attendance at the funeral who were lined up in order of seniority.
Earlier this year, an EU official, speaking anonymously to discuss the issue, told CNN, "What for us is remarkable is that we were not notified."
"For a diplomatic move like that, you should at least tell the organization involved," the official said.
