Nashville police arrest man who allegedly dragged officer with an ATV

Walter Moss II was arrested in Springfield, Tennessee, on Wednesday by the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force, police said.

He faces three felony and three misdemeanor charges for allegedly dragging MNPD Sgt. John Bourque down Broadway in Nashville last Saturday when about 100 dirt bikes, ATVs and four-wheelers illegally took over the busy street, police said.

The charges include aggravated assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment, evading arrest and leaving the scene of a personal injury collision, police said.

Moss, 30, was jailed under $50,000 bond in Nashville, police tweeted.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspect has an attorney

Bourque, a 22-year police veteran, was treated and released from Vanderbilt Medical Center after the incident, according to a tweet from the department.

"He struck me head on, took me by surprise, of course," Bourque told reporters this week. "I know many people were putting things on social media that I tried to tackle him off the car and I did not. I would not want to tackle any kind of ATV."

Bourque said he did not think the group was out to hurt a police officer.

"It seems like they just want to take over the streets because they can because they're a large group, and I just think they're just daring anyone to stop them from doing what they're doing," he said.

Police said the group on "dirt bikes, motorcycles, ATVs, and four-wheelers" took over the street around 3 p.m. on Saturday. It was the second day in a row that off-road vehicles began illegally driving on major roads throughout Nashville, according to CNN affiliate WTVF.

"These individuals were weaving in and out of moving and parked vehicles, endangering motorists and pedestrians, when Sergeant Bourque was struck," the police department said in a statement.

About 100 dirt bikes, motorcycles, ATVs, and four wheelers that illegally took over Broadway Saturday around 3 p.m.

In a video of the incident, Bourque is seen being dragged along by the four-wheeled ATV before being let go into a metal barrier along the roadway. He had been attempting to stop one of the vehicles when he was struck, according to WTVF.

LaShonda Parks-Bailey told WTVF that on Sunday morning, one of the ATVs crashed into her son's car while they were on their way to church.

"He lost control of the four wheeler and it flipped over on my son's car," she told the news station. "They ran up the street, got on a bike with another one of the riders. A black truck pulled up, scooped everything up and they just went up on their way like nothing ever happened.

"They're putting not only themselves in danger, but innocent bystanders," she said.
