The 20-year-old Greek ended Federer's reign in Melbourne when he defeated the twice defending champion 6-7 (11-13) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 7-6 (7-5) at Rod Laver Arena in Sunday's night session.
Federer, who went 0-for-12 on break points, lost in the fourth round of a grand slam for the second straight time having exited at the hands of Australia's John Millman at the US Open.
Tsitsipas, meanwhile, made his first grand slam quarterfinal and based on Sunday's performance, might go even deeper.
