The former Auburn head coach, who had considered running for governor of Alabama in 2018, has his eyes set on the Senate seat currently held by Democrat Doug Jones.
"After more than a year of listening to Alabama's citizens, I have heard your concerns and hopes for a better tomorrow. I am humbled to announce the next step -- I will be a @GOP candidate for US Senate. I invite you to join my team," Tuberville said in a Twitter post on Saturday.
Jones won the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions in 2017 when Sessions became US Attorney General. Jones beat Roy Moore by half a percentage point in a contentious special election campaign.
Jones earned a bachelor's degree from Auburn's rival, the University of Alabama.
CNN has reached out to Tuberville and his campaign for comment.
The Republican primary for the seat is on March 3, 2020. Rep. Bradley Byrne has also announced he would seek the Republican nomination for Senate.
Tuberville, 64, won 159 games during his more than 20-year head coaching career at Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas Tech and Cincinnati. His 2004 Auburn team went undefeated, winning the SEC title, but were passed over from playing in the national championship game.
