Washington Post: Dick Cheney confronts Pence about administration's foreign policy

During a private retreat Saturday hosted by the American Enterprise Institute, Cheney raised his concerns over Trump's comments against the North Atlantic Trade Organization and the surprise withdrawal of US troops from Syria, the Post reported.
"I worry that the bottom line of that kind of an approach is we have an administration that looks a lot more like Barack Obama than Ronald Reagan," Cheney said to Pence, according to the Post, which obtained a transcript of the discussion.
Trump administration may seek more money from US allies hosting military forces
Cheney told Pence he's worried "we're getting into a situation when our friends and allies around the world that we depend upon are going to lack confidence in us," the Post noted.
The reportedly tense discussion showed the divide in the Republican Party over Trump's "America First" approach to foreign policy. Cheney, a hawk in the George W. Bush administration, has been criticized for his role in backing the Iraq War, warning that then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein reconstituted nuclear weapons when ultimately no weapons of mass destruction were discovered.
The Post noted that the discussion billed as a "vice-presidential chat" during the AEI annual world forum quickly devolved into an "academic exercise as Cheney peppered Pence with questions and Pence responded carefully but forcefully."
A spokesman for Pence confirmed to the Post that the discussion occurred over the weekend but declined further comment.
CNN has reached out to Pence's office for comment on the conversation.
According to the Post, the former vice president also raised concerns over reports that Trump doesn't spend time with his intelligence staff and frequently disagrees with them. The former vice president also reportedly pointed to the high turnover rate at intelligence agencies.
Cheney also expressed skepticism about the Trump administration's pursuit of a policy that would seek more money from US allies hosting military forces, first reported by Bloomberg.
"I don't know, that sounded like a New York state real estate deal to me," Cheney said, adding that he worries Trump views foreign policy as a financial transaction, the Post noted.
Pence joked about Cheney's grilling and the lack of "softball" questions before going on to defend the President, according to the newspaper.
