"I had a pretty good weekend. Not as a good as Donald Trump's weekend, but still pretty good," the "Late Show" host told his audience on Monday night.
Colbert opened Monday's show by talking about the delivery of special counsel Robert Mueller's report to the Department of Justice on Friday. He also spoke about Attorney General William Barr's summary of the report. According to Barr's summary, Mueller found no evidence that Trump campaign associates colluded with Russians to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.
Colbert, who called Barr a "white-collar Fred Flintstone," joked that the most troubling part of the news was that Trump was, in fact, not a Russian asset.
"I say troubling news because if Trump is not working with the Russians then what the hell is wrong with him?" Colbert said. "If they don't have anything on him, why does he keep saying nice things about Vladimir Putin?"
The host went on to say that the ending to Mueller's investigations was "anti-climactic."
"It's like saying, 'guess what kids?! Santa came! And he brought mostly nothing,'" Colbert joked.
Colbert, who has been a fierce critic of the president, said that a lot of people want Trump's critics to apologize. And so he obliged.
"I've said one or two things about Donald Trump, like how he's a terrible president," Colbert said. "So ... I'm just going to bite the bullet and say it: Mr. President if you're watching, and I know you are, I'm sorry that you're a terrible president."
The Mueller report was also on the mind of ABC's Jimmy Kimmel on Monday night.
"I haven't been this confused about an ending since the series finale of 'Lost,'" Kimmel said on Monday's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"
Kimmel added that Trump said it wouldn't bother him if the attorney general released the full Mueller report.
"I think he said that about his taxes, too," Kimmel said. "So we'll see."
Trevor Noah of "The Daily Show" was also a bit perplexed by the report's conclusion.
"Robert Mueller spends two years investigating obstruction of justice and his conclusion is 'I don't know, what do you guys think?'" Noah said Monday night. "If I wanted my questions answered with questions, I wouldn't get a special counsel, I would get a therapist!"
