Gabriel Garcia Marquez's '100 Years of Solitude' will become a Netflix series

"This marks the first and only time in more than 50 years that his family has allowed the project to be adapted for the screen," Netflix said Wednesday.
"One Hundred Years of Solitude," which was originally published in Spanish in 1967, is perhaps the best known work by the Nobel prize-winning author.
The novel is set in the fictional "Macondo," which was inspired by Marquez's hometown in northern Colombia.
Chilean poet Pablo Neruda said that "One Hundred Years of Solitude" constituted "the greatest revelation in the Spanish language since the Don Quixote of Cervantes."
Marquez was a treasure to the Colombian people. When Marquez died at age 87 in 2014, Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos declared three days of national mourning, and ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff across the country.
