Amazon expands in Austin with 800 new tech jobs

On Thursday, the company announced plans to create 800 new tech jobs in Austin in areas such as engineering, research science and cloud computing. Austin did not provide any incentives to Amazon for the new jobs.
Amazon already has 1,000 corporate employees in Austin. The city has increasingly become a tech hub --- Facebook (FB), Google (GOOG) and Dell all have a presence in the area.
Amazon also owns Whole Foods, which is headquartered in Austin.
This is Amazon's first significant corporate expansion since it scrapped plans to build a second headquarters in New York's Long Island City neighborhood last month following backlash from local politicians and some members of the community.
Last November, Amazon (AMZN) chose New York City and Northern Virginia to split duty as its second headquarters, referred to as HQ2, after a more than year-long search. Both locations were supposed to be home to 25,000 workers over time. (Amazon still plans to move forward with the Northern Virginia campus and a new hub in Nashville, Tennessee).
Amazon received 238 proposals for HQ2 and narrowed those down to 20 finalists, including Austin. Contenders tried to woo the company with elaborate gestures and big tax incentives.
Amazon cancels plans to build New York headquarters
Amazon has said it will not reopen the search for HQ2. Instead, the company will distribute the jobs meant for Long Island City across its existing 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the United States and Canada. However, the Austin expansion was already in the works prior to Amazon's decision to cancel its Long Island City second headquarters.
Amazon said it has invested over $7 billion in the state of Texas since 2011, including infrastructure and compensation to its employees.
